Freedom Forest

In Feb 2023, EcoSikh Ireland joined Reforest Nation to plant 10,000 trees in Europe’s largest Miyawaki-inspired forest in honour of the people of Ukraine and refugees across the globe.

The forest is planted in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, using techniques developed by Japanese scientist Prof. Miyawaki, and has the potential to resemble a 100-year-old forest in just 10 years. The forest, named “The Guru Nanak Freedom Forest”  brought over 200 members from the local Irish, and Sikh communities, and Ukrainian refugees together to plant 10k trees of 17 native tree species to encourage biodiversity.

Tree Species list:

Irish oak, English oak, Scot’s pine, Alder, Cherry, Rowan, Whitethorn, Blackthorn, Silver birch, Downy birch, Hazel, Spindle, Crab apple, Scarlett Willow, Eared willow, Grey willow.
